Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation
Los Angeles Cluster

In 2003, HBC operated three program formats in Los Angles, KLVE at 107.5 FM, KSCA at 101.9 FM and Recuerdo, a "trimulcast" of three signals at 103.9 and 98.3 FM and 1020 AM.

KLVE is Spanish soft contemporary, often called "romántica." KSCA is Mexican regional music and Recuerdo plays 60's oldies from Mexico and Latin America.

HBC Mission Statement

HBC Los Angeles Moved in 2001

This building in Glendale is home to the HBC stations which occupy the top 2 floors. Let's take a photo-tour of the facilities.

We are getting closer to the building!

Welcome in and ¡Bienvenido!

Here is the elevator lobby, looking into the reception area. If you won a prize, this is where you want to go!

Guest Production Studio

Right behind the lobby is the guest production studio, where Pepe Vega records paid programs and infomercials which run on Sunday morning on the HBC stations.

Next to Pepe's studio is Enrique Marroquín's edit facility, where the Renán Almendarez Coello "El Cucuy de la Mañana" show is prepared for syndication.

Continuity and Traffic

Continuity is the department which handles the logistics of sales orders: commercials are received, orders are sent to record copy and spot changes are taken care of. Juan Francisco Arréchiga, with over 30 years of radio experience, takes a moment to smile for the camera.

Traffic is not the department that gives road reports; it is where commercials are scheduled for broadcast. Every ad contract has to be carefully entered into the Marketron computer so that the commercials ordered by our customers will run exactly where they should! Avis Turner handles the job for KLVE.

Who ran the place in '02?

Ken Christensen is Vice President and General Manager of the HBC Los Angeles stations. He's the lucky guy with the the double sided view from the corner office.. and the man responsible for keeping HBC's stations #1 and #2 in adults 25-54 .

KSCA "La Nueva 101.9"

Here is the main studio for La Nueva... KSCA is LA's #1 station in adults 25-54, and has occupied that position since going on the air in 1967.

El Cucuy de la Mañana... Renán Almendarez Coello hosts Los Angeles' highest rated morning show every morning form 5 AM to 11 AM on KSCA.

Renán has his own fascinating and constantly updated website. Click on the graphic above and visit it now!

KSCA's promotions director Ricardo Castillo talks with Michael Rey of the HBC technical department.

K-Love Studio

Luz María Briceño does the midday shift on K-Love, which has been #1 or #2 in adults 25-54 since 1995 in the highly competitive Los Angeles market...where there are now 21 Spanish language signals.

Richard Santiago, KLVE news director, prepares his morning information in this studio, adjacent to the KLVE control room.

Here is a close up of one of the "consoles" or mixing boards used in the HBC studios. Every sliding fader or "pot" controls a different audio source.

Recuerdo 103.9 & 98.3 & 1020 AM

Recuerdo Program Director Amalia González goes over the morning show with Jaime Piña, 5 AM-11 AM program host.

Recuerdo "on air" studio with  Gustavo Neri on the air. Recuerdo features all the big hits form Mexico of the 60's and early 70's.

Downtown LA seen form the distance from the Recuerdo studio on the 25th floor!

All the audio except the live announcer on Recuerdo comes form a digital "Audio Vault" storage system. Here, in the Recuerdo studio, the announcer can see the music and commercials that are scheduled to play. The announcers can also insert special effects and program elements to make their show more entertaining and varied.

XM Satellite Radio

HBC provides the programming for 5 of the XM satellite radio channels. All are supervised from Los Angeles, while the rock en español and soft contemporary channels are also produced there. Here is Omar Velasco, program supervisor for the rock channel, at the entrance to the XM facilities.

Ricardo Manzanares oversees the XM operations nationally and coordinates the production of the recorded "EL Cucuy" programming.

If it doesn't work, scream!

Michael "Xrey" Rey, hard at work (just kidding... he is posing for the camera) at the service bench in the HBC Technical Operations Center.

The TOC also includes lots of rack space for the audio gear, remote broadcast equipment, transmitter control and audio processing and digital storage for the HBC stations. Also in the area are the UPS for drop-out free broadcasting and the controls for the large generator that can keep us running for days in an emergency.

Where are the commercials recorded?

HBC has 5 production studios, one of which can also be used as an emergency on-air studio. These are the facilities where commercials, feature programs and artist greetings are recorded. Manny Sepúlveda, "Vitaminas", Santiago Nieto and Francisco Moreno do commercial production and station imaging for HBC in Los Angeles.

Promotions

Adriana Navarro is Promotions Director for KLVE and Recuerdo. She coordinates contests, street appearances, remotes, shows and other station events and activities.
